"TONBRIDGE CASTLE", in Tonbridge, England

28 Nov 2007

Here is a video about another of the wonderful old English castles . . . this one in the charming town of Tonbridge, in Southern England . . . not to be confused with nearby "Tunbridge Wells", altho' "Tonbridge" WAS originally called "Tunbridge", but later changed to Tonbridge to help minimize at least SOME of the confusion, with nearby Tunbridge Wells LOL, but, BUT . . . you still need to be careful when buying TRAIN tickets, so as not to get a ticket to the wrong place! :) I visited this castle during the off season, so I had the interior of the castle TOTALLY to myself for the hour I was wandering around inside, so it was great walking in all the rooms and stairways, trying to visualize the people, and their lifestyle, that used to live here and defend it from attacks since it was first constructed in the 11th Century. The "Gatehouse", which is the main visual topic of this video, was constructed in the 13th Century. Being a retired architect, I found it REALLY interesting to learn that the architect for this castle and for a series of other castles for the same royal client, did SUCH a good job designing "state of the art" castles for him, that the royal client had the architect KILLED after the architect completed his work, rather than run the risk of the architect then going to OTHER clients to design similarly great defensive castles for THEM!! so geez . . . talk about an UNGRATEFUL CLIENT! After the castle was built, the basement was used to store food for the winter months. The food and beverages 700 years ago would have included such things as smoked meats, garlic and herbs, barrels of wine, beer, salted fish, baskets of wheat, chestnuts, etc. Swords in those days were cleaned in sawdust and sand, arrows with metal tips stuck in a barrel of sand to avoid rusting. Chain mail, which was greasy, muddy and bloody from battles, was washed in a mixture of sand, gravel and water, then hung up to dry inside a cloth covering. Here's a link to a LOT!! more history on the castle and surrounding area: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonbridge and, Here's a link to other websites with lots of info: http://www.picturesofengland.com/England/Kent/Tonbridge/Tonbridge_Castle and, http://www.tonbridge-kent.com/Amenit/castle.htm and, Here's a link to the official castle website: http://www.tonbridgecastle.org/cgi-bin/buildpage.pl?mysql=2 The song I chose for the video is "Indian Boy" by Brulé. The song seems to go really well with the peaceful tranquility of this castle, where so much death and violence occurred so many years ago. Some Tonbridge locals say that there have been numerous ghost sightings at the castle, which wouldn't be surprising, given how many people died violent deaths there. I felt I was being watched the entire time I was inside the castle on my own, but that was probably because of the presence of the security surveillance cameras! LOL If you enjoyed the music choice, here is some interesting biography about this musical artist Brulé (obtained from a Yahoo website): "Native American musical traditions are fused with contemporary rock influences by pianist/keyboardist Brulé (born: Paul La Roche). A member of the lower Brulé Lakota nation, who was adopted as an infant and raised in a non-Native family, Brulé uses music as a way to bring together the two cultures of his past. During a telephone interview, Brulé explained that his 1997 debut album, "We The People" was "a means to bridge the gap between small town Americana and the Native American experience". His second album, "Lakota Piano", released in 1998, featured piano interpretations of songs by 1970s Native American rock band, XIT. Brulé's third album, "One Holy Night", released the same year, was recorded with Robby Bee, the son of former XIT member and owner of the Native American-oriented SOAR label and its Natural Visions subsidiary, Tom Bee. With his fourth album, "One Nation", released in September 1999, Brulé took a more global approach. "It's a further step in the evolving story of my life, " he explained, "a way to bring all the people of the world together". Thanks for watching the video . . . . . and for reading the video notes all the way to the END!!! :) :) (Pete, aka LJG, aka LifeJourneyGuy)

San Rafael Swell Utah

3 Jul 2007

The San Rafael Swell is a geographical feature in southeastern Utah on the Colorado Plateau. It is about 50 miles long and 30 miles wide. This 600,000 acre area along Interstate 70 has many unique and spectacular landforms. Some of the landforms are slot canyons, sandstone cliffs, mesas, buttes, springs and canyons. Most of the area is under the management of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Early Mormon settlers eked out an existence by ranching and taming the herds of wild horses that still roam the area. Some uranium mining was done in the 1950's. There are Native American rock art sites and the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry to explore as well. Slide show by John Wanserski. For further information see: http://www.sanrafaelswell.org/ Bureau of Land Management: http://www.blm.gov/utah/price/SanRafaelDesert.htm My Wisconsin Space http://mywisconsinspace.com/
